Pilot Robot Kit for grades 3-5 next to a tablet running True Robotics Playground

Ready-to-teach lessons, online

K-8 Curriculum

Every True Robotics lesson is written and ready to teach. It lives in the Teacher Digital Portal: the lesson plan, a PowerPoint with how-to videos, an entrance ticket and the answer keys. Teachers report about 5 minutes of prep time.

What each program teaches

One program for each grade band, with a version for every grade it covers. Here is what students do with the robot in each one. The full curriculum map is on the program’s own page.

Grades K-3

Paving the Way with Treads

  • Robotics and coding
  • Robotics for math
  • Robotics for ELA
Four students stand in a row with game controllers while their purple robot kits drive down the gym floor in a line
Grades 3-5

Taking Off with Pilot

  • Build the Pilot Robot Kit
  • Math the robot needs
  • Programming and sensors
Two middle school students assemble a purple robot chassis at a lab bench with the build guide open beside it
Grades 6-8

Introduction to Robotics with Axle

  • Build Axle
  • Math strands with an escape room
  • Engineering design and programming

Every lesson is written to the standards your state already sets. See how each program lines up with your standards.

The Teacher Digital Portal

The Teacher Digital Portal is the website where every program’s curriculum lives. The Curriculum Portal holds what a teacher teaches from. The Learning Portal holds what a teacher trains on.

Teachers do not have to arrive knowing robotics. Every licensed teacher gets a 30 minute introduction session and one-on-one training, held virtually, plus a named point of contact. Professional development has the detail.

Four tiles, as a teacher sees them:

  • Curriculum Portal: Access curriculum resources.
  • Learning Portal: Access training resources.
  • Support Form: Having a problem? Let us know!
  • Robot Parts Catalog: Need a replacement?

What comes with every lesson

Every day of the curriculum has its own lesson plan and a PowerPoint that is already built.

Nothing is asked of a student without a video first. Many are screen recordings of our own software, showing which button to press.

See one real lesson

Day 10 Introduction to Programming, from the 4th grade folder of Taking Off with Pilot. The plan opens with three objectives and the day’s vocabulary (Programming, Drive blocks), then lays out the activities with their timings.

  • Understand the fundamentals of programming
  • Understand how to use the True Robotics Playground Software
  • Apply that knowledge to program Pilot to move at different angles

The listed times add up to 46 minutes, within the 45 to 60 minutes a Pilot lesson runs. The paired PowerPoint runs 20 slides.

How each program’s curriculum is organized

Open a program in the Curriculum Portal and you see a folder for every grade you have access to, plus the full curriculum map as a PDF and a Word file.

Inside a grade folder

Each lesson has its own folder, and a lesson that runs across several days shares one. The 4th grade Pilot folder opens with:

  • Day 03-04 Pilot Kit Building
  • Day 05 Using Mixed Numbers & Improper Fractions When Measuring With a Ruler
  • Day 06 Factors and Multiples

The General curriculum

Pilot and Axle add one more folder beside the grade folders. The General curriculum removes any required prior knowledge and just looks at robotics and coding as a whole. It suits mixed-grade groups such as after-school clubs. Treads has grade folders only.

The software

Where students write their code

Two students at a classroom desk program a Pilot robot on a Chromebook running True Robotics Playground

Students code in True Robotics Playground, a drag-and-drop coding site at app.truerobotics.org. Every robot in the K-8 Classroom Suite is programmed there, with no student logins.

Your calendar

Fitting the curriculum to your calendar

A unit’s day count is a starting point. A school with fewer days gets a scope and sequence built with its teachers. We start from two questions: how many days you have, and what your goals are.

Curriculum questions

Where do teachers find the curriculum?

In the Teacher Digital Portal, at truerobotics.org/curriculum-access. The portal has two main resources: the Curriculum Portal, which holds all the teaching resources, and the Learning Portal, which holds all the training resources. When teachers open a program, they see every grade level they have access to, the General curriculum, and for Pilot and Axle a FlexForge add-on folder. Treads has four grade folders: Kindergarten, 1st Grade, 2nd Grade and 3rd Grade. Each program also has a full curriculum map, as a PDF and a Word document, for a quick look at the topics across the unit.

How much prep time do teachers need?

Most of the teachers we work with say prep takes about five minutes once they understand the flow, and that is mostly a matter of how fast the PowerPoint loads on their computer. The lesson plan, presentation, entrance ticket, reflection and answer keys are ready in the Curriculum Portal, so there is nothing to write. Our Director of Education is a former teacher, and her goal is always to get prep time down to zero.

Why does every file come as a PDF and a Word document?

So teachers can choose. If you like the PDF as it is, print or download it and teach from it. When you need specific modifications or accommodations for different groups of students, the editable Word version makes that easy. Every lesson plan, entrance ticket, reflection, answer key and curriculum map comes in both formats. The PowerPoint presentation and the lesson videos are the only files that come in one format.

What if a teacher has never taught robotics or coding?

The lessons are built for exactly that. The presentations show students precisely what to do the first time they do anything, so hesitant or intimidated teachers can learn right alongside their students through the videos and the speaker notes. Teachers also get the self-paced Learning Portal, a 30-minute personalized intro session, one to two hour one-on-one training sessions and an assigned point of contact. We always recommend that teachers build the robot themselves, following the portal's build videos, before putting it in front of students.
